Highlights of Special Sake Train and Visit a Sake Brewery in Gifu

In this unique experience you will ride the special sightseeing "Sake Masu Train" of Yoro Railway, a charming local railway line in the west part of Gifu prefecture. The train will take you on an hour and ten minute scenic ride through the rural landscape of Gifu and will end at Ogaki city, known for its abundant fresh water springs and high-quality Japanese sake. You will then stroll the pretty streets of Ogaki together with your guide and will visit a sake brewery and the biggest factory for producing wooden masu cups traditionally used to drink sake.

Begin the experience by meeting your guide at 12:15 in front of the Yoro Railway gates inside Kuwana Station. The specially arranged private carriage of the Sake Masu Train will offer a memorable lunch ride paired with two bottles of locally brewed sake and a masu cup as a present. The train departs Kuwana exactly at 12:45.
Enjoy the picturesque scenery from the window while relishing the lunch box and the mellow taste of Ogaki-brewed sake.
Your guide will entertain you during the ride with interesting information about popular sightseeing spots along the Yoro Railway, such as Tado Shrine, the Site of Reversible Destiny in Yoro Park and Yoro Falls. Time will fly and you will arrive shortly before 14:00 at Ogaki Station.

From there on, start a walking tour along the pleasant streets of Ogaki together with your guide. Known as a city of water, Ogaki boasts a large amount of underground fresh water springs and has been well known for producing quality Japanese sake. Several clear water rivers and moats cross the former castle town and during your walk you will get to see the restored 4-layer Ogaki Castle.

You will eventually reach Takeuchi Sake Brewery and meet the current 9th generation sake master who will give you a tour of the brewery finishing with a tasting of locally brewed sake and fruit liquor. Ogaki's sake production has been flourishing thanks to the light and mellow taste of the city's underground soft water, which is an essential condition for brewing well-rounded and cleaner sake. In the tasting experience at the end of the brewery tour, you will use a wooden masu which further enhances the flavour and adds a delightful woody aroma. The sake master will reveal more secrets about the most recommended ways of enjoying Ogaki's sake.

Next stop along the walk is Ohashi Ryoki, a major manufacturer of wooden masu cups traditionally used for drinking sake or measuring rice. Ogaki holds 80% of Japan's masu production and you will not only see how the square wooden cups are made inside the factory, but will try your hands at making your own masu! At the end of the tour around 16:40 you will return to Ogaki Station from where you can continue your journey in Japan.
